Niching Is the Most Effective Thing You Can Do for AEO

The advisors who specialize will dominate AI search. Here’s why.

I know I’ve been writing a lot about AI these days, and specifically about AEO, which stands for answer engine optimization. AEO is the practice of making sure your online presence is set up so that AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Google AI Mode recommend you when someone asks for help. It’s the next evolution of SEO, but instead of ranking on a page of links, you’re being named directly in an answer.

I keep coming back to it because it’s the most obvious marketing advantage I see for advisors right now. It reminds me of the early days of social media, SEO, and Google reviews. The advisors who figured those out early got a head start. AEO is the same kind of moment. The advisors who act now will get a first-mover advantage.

And the single most effective thing you can do for AEO is have a niche.

Here’s why. When someone types “I need a financial advisor” into ChatGPT, the AI has to pick from thousands of options with almost nothing to go on. A generalist firm with a generic website doesn’t give it much to work with.

But when someone types “I’m looking for a financial advisor who specializes in helping tech employees with equity compensation in Denver,” the AI is looking for a very specific match. If your website, your content, and your profiles clearly say that’s exactly who you serve, you just made the AI’s job easy. You’re the answer.

Niche advisors give AI tools what they need: specificity. A clear audience. Defined expertise. Content that addresses specific problems for specific people. That’s exactly how AI decides who to recommend. It’s pattern matching, and the more specific your pattern, the easier you are to match.

Generalist advisors are competing with everyone for vague queries. Niche advisors are the only answer for specific ones. And people are getting more specific with their AI searches, not less.

The takeaway: AEO is the next marketing frontier, and niche advisors are positioned to win it. The more clearly your online presence communicates who you serve and what you specialize in, the more likely AI tools are to recommend you by name. The first movers here will have an advantage that’s hard to replicate.
